How To Make Homemade Popsicles

To make your red, white and blue popsicles, start by cooking one cup of the water and sugar to form the base of the lemonade. Once this mixture cools, the lemon juice is added, and the remaining water follows.

Next, prepare your fruit. Wash and dry your blueberries, peel and chop your pear and cut up your watermelon. Melon is really fun and easy to cut into shapes using cookie cutters. Below you will see a (very old) photo of cantaloupe and honeydew I cut with shaped cookie cutters

Cookie cutters that are made for fondant or even clay are great for this. Truth be told I’ve even found some in my daughter’s clay and PlayDoh sets. I have this set, and it’s perfect for this.

If you’re short on time, you can simply chop up your watermelon and add it, it will still be delicious. That said, the stars are so fun, especially for 4th of July or Memorial Day.

A measuring cup by fresh fruit

Layer your fruit into the popsicle molds. This doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t sorry about having fruit in precise spots or positions.

After that, the lemonade is poured into the molds. The cover for the popsicle molds gets placed back on top, then the popsicle sticks are inserted. Then it’s into the freezer for at least six hours, but preferably overnight.

Tips, Tricks, Questions & Answers

Make sure to chop your fruit small enough that it easily fits in the molds.

Can I use store bought lemonade? Yes, you can. You could also use apple juice or white grape juice.

Can I use other fruits? Absolutely! Raspberries and strawberries are both excellent choices to use in place of watermelon. Apples can be used in place of pears.

What popsicle mold should I use? A silicone popsicle mold is best, it makes it easy to remove the popsicles. I prefer to put my mold onto a small try or plate. This makes it easier to move it to the freezer without spills.

How do you remove the popsicles? When ready to serve, hold the popsicle mold under running hot water for 5-10 seconds for easy removal of the popsicles.
