Ingredient Info

How to make chocolate covered apples
  • Apples – You can use whatever apples you like the best! Granny Smith apples are obviously the classic, but you do you! Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Gala apples are all great options as well.
  • Caramel – Make sure you grab a soft caramel, and not a hard candy caramel for this recipe. Kraft Caramels or Kraft Caramel Bits are my personal favorites. Any of the ones that are soft and chewy should melt down fine, but check the packaging to make sure before you buy!
  • Chocolate – This recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use chocolate candy melts or almond bark if you’d prefer. You also can use dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or a white chocolate if you’re feeling fancy!
  • Heavy Cream – This is to soften the caramel a bit so it’s not so tough, and more like a sauce or glaze.
  • Pecans – Pecans add a lovely crunch to these chocolate apples, but you can use a different kind of nut instead. Walnuts or Roasted almonds would taste great with these. You can also omit these from the recipe entirely.
  • Lemon Juice – This is so the apples don’t brown immediately. Tossing apples in lemon juice will keep them fresher for longer. You don’t have to do this if you don’t mind a little brown on your apples.

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Start by washing the apples and patting them dry. Cut the apples in half, then each half into 4 wedges. Go ahead and trim the core off of each wedge and remove seeds if there are some.
  2. Stick a wooden skewer into the bottom of each wedge. You could also use a popsicle stick. Place the skewered apple wedges in a bowl and toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning. Set them aside.
  3. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted.
  4. Line a baking tray or board with parchment paper. Take your skewered apple wedge and dunk them a little more than halfway into the chocolate. Let the excess drip off, then place the chocolate covered apple onto the parchment. Repeat this with all of the apples, then refrigerate them for 15 minutes or until hardened.
  5. While those cool, in a separate microwave safe bowl, combine the caramel and heavy cream. Microwave this mixture in 30 second intervals, stirring after each one until melted. Once the chocolate has set on the apples, remove them from the fridge. Chop up your pecans and set them aside. Drizzle the melted caramel sauce on top of the apples, then sprinkle on the chopped pecans.
  6. Place these back in the fridge for about 20 more minutes, or until set. Remove from the fridge, serve and enjoy!

Tips & Advice

Storage – If you have leftover apple slices, you can store them in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Because you doused them with lemon juice, they shouldn’t brown. If they do, it will be minimal.

You don’t have to stop at pecans as a topping. You can dress these up or down as much as you want! You can add stuff like mini M&Ms, coconut flakes, crushed Oreos, mini marshmallows, cereal, crushed pretzels, sprinkles, and so much more!

FAQs

Why is my chocolate not sticking to my apples?

If your apples are still a little wet from the lemon juice, pat them dry before dipping in the chocolate. If they’re too wet, the chocolate won’t stick to the apple slices.

Does chocolate go with apples?

Absolutely! They work really well together. If you want, you can just dunk them in caramel instead.

Why did my melted chocolate not harden?

This could be because of a few things. You used a candy type chocolate like Hersheys or chocolate sauce instead of chocolate chips. While this may work in some cases, the chocolate is likely not going to harden unless frozen. This could also be because you didn’t put it in the fridge to harden. Chocolate chips will likely stay melted at room temperature.
