This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!

My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!

I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!

Dog Cake Recipe

This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.

I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.

Decorating Your Cake

When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!

That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.

No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.

The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

I made this for my dogs party today! He’s a year old and instead of treats I crushed oat treats and covered the edges in it. It’s pretty fancy looking and he seemed pretty stoked. Extremely simple recipe, to a T. Thank you so much!

I made this cake for a Doggie Birthday Party.. and doubled the recipe, but put it in a 9 inch pan.. five dogs.. from a 12 pound Yorkshire Terrier to a 149 pound Newfoundland ..DEVOURED it.
Easy to make, smelled amazing and a hit with the doggie part guests.

  3. We can’t wait to make this next week as our puppy Izzi is turning 1…. thanks sooo much for the recipe!!

Both my pug and boxer loved this cake! They went nuts over it! I didn’t have pumpkin on hand so I substituted puréed sweet potato instead (just peeled it, boiled it till soft and threw it in the food processor). Will definitely make this again next year.

I just made this for our 9 year Labrador retriever for her Final Barknic Pawty. She has cancer and a month or so left, so she is getting any and everything she wants!

I’m SO excited to see her munch into this!!

A few things I noticed and it may be because I used Gluten Free flour (cup4cup), but the batter is a wee dense. It’s a little lumpy, but came out great!

Also, if I ever make this again (I’m sure I will for other dogs) but I will use a little more Greek yogurt and peanut butter for the frosting. My cake has a few bare spots, which is fine. But the perfectionist in me yes have like a few extra ounces.

Other than that, so far it is a wonderful recipe!! I even tasted it — pretty delicious. 😉

    It’s my pupper’s 3rd Birthday today!
We’re having a tea party for him on the weekend, these recipes will be much appreciated by him, his sister & all their 4 legged friends!

  7. I doubled the recipe; it came out cooked, but it’s actually pretty flat. I used 8 inch round pans. Any idea what might have happened? Do I need more baking soda?

    1. Laura, do you have an oven thermometer? I’m finding that’s one of the biggest issues with baked goods not rising correctly. I actually keep an inexpensive one in my oven and it’s crazy how oven temps can be off. For example yesterday mine said it was 375 and it wasn’t even 340. That can absolutely impact rise. I don’t think I’d impact baking soda, I try to be really careful with ingredients for pets.
