Ingredient Info
This is a discussion about the ingredients. For the actual recipe with amounts, please see the recipe below.
- Steak – I use a sirloin steak, but you can also use chuck roast, beef stew meat, really any cut of beef you like.
- Au Jus Mix – I make it easy for myself and grab a packet of Au Jus gravy mix.
- Broth – I used beef broth because we’re using beef, but this would work fine with chicken or vegetable broth if that’s what you have.
- Onion – Sweet onion is my favorite, but you can use yellow or white instead.

Tips & Advice

Christi’s Kitchen Tips
Delicious Gravy Tips – The Au Jus alone isn’t very thick, it comes out soup-like. If you’d like to thicken the sauce, you can make a cornstarch slurry. About 30 minutes before serving, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water or beef broth. Add this to the crock pot and stir. While it cooks, you should see the sauce thicken.
Storage – Store the leftover steak bites in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the sauce on the stove until warm. I don’t recommend microwaving, that can cause the steak to become too tough.
Serve With – I switch between serving this with some white rice and mashed or fried potatoes. Sometimes I’ll switch it up and serve it over egg noodles or as a sandwich with some Swiss or provolone cheese.
For a pop of color I also like to add broccoli, green beans, brussels sprouts or glazed carrots on the side. Sometimes I’ll even stir a handful of spinach into the gravy.
Equipment
To make these slow cooker steak bites, you’ll just need a large skillet, mixing bowls, as well as a 6-7 qt slow cooker.

FAQs
Yes! With this recipe, you’ll sear the steak on the stove first. No need to worry about putting raw meat in a crockpot and wondering whether or not it’s cooked properly.
I prefer sirloin for this recipe because the meat stays tender even through a longer cooking period.
Make sure the steak is fully submerged in liquid while in the slow cooker. Cooking them on low versus high can also help keep the beef from becoming tough and offers great flavor as well.
