- Apples – I recommend using granny smith apples. Honey crisp or gala apples are also fine.
- Frozen Cranberries – Don’t defrost! You need them frozen for this recipe.
- Maple Syrup – Honey or agave is also an acceptable substitute.
- Oats – Rolled oats are best, but quick oats will also work.
- Pecans – Chop them up fine or leave them as big pieces depending on your preference. You can also sub this for walnuts.
- Butter – Make sure the butter is unsalted, cold and cut into cubes.

Tips & Advice
Christi’s Kitchen Tips
All About Apples!
- If you prefer a tart apple crisp, use granny smith apples. If you want something a little sweeter, honey crisp is a great choice. If you want both, do a mix of both!
- Peeling the apples will give you a smoother texture, but it’s not necessary. You can leave the skin on for extra texture and fiber.
- If you don’t want to use fresh apples, you can use apple pie filling, but if you take that route, I wouldn’t add the maple syrup to the mixture at all. It would be too sweet.
Storage – Once it has cooled in the baking dish, store the remaining Apple Cranberry Crisp by covering the baking dish with a lid or with some foil, and keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, you can pop it back in the oven until warm, or heat up a serving in the microwave.

FAQs
Crisps are traditionally made with a topping of oats and flour, crumbles are made with just flour.
This can happen for many reasons. The apple and cranberry mixture could have been too wet and absorbed the topping, it could be that not enough butter or sugar was added, or that the topping was made with butter that was too soft or warm.
Lemon juice helps keep the apples fresh once sliced and also helps draw out the juice and flavors from the cranberries and apples.
